A Legacy of Speed and Honor
For centuries, the horse has been more than an animal in Kurdish culture—it’s a symbol of freedom, strength, and heritage. From the legendary cavalry of Kurdish princes to modern racing circuits, the bond between Kurd and horse remains unbroken. Our equestrian team stands at the intersection of this rich tradition and contemporary competitive racing, working to preserve our equine heritage while achieving excellence on the track.

The Kurdish Horse: A Living Treasure
The Kurdish horse, particularly the Kurdish Arabian and Kurdish Mountain Horse, possesses unique characteristics honed by centuries of adaptation to our rugged terrain:
- Exceptional endurance for long-distance rides through mountains
- Sure-footed agility on rocky, uneven paths
- Natural stamina developed at high altitudes
- Intelligent temperament forged through close human partnership
These breeds are living treasures, and our racing program doubles as a conservation effort. We work with local breeders to maintain pure bloodlines while introducing modern training methods that enhance performance without compromising the horses’ natural abilities.
Our Equestrian Program
The Iraqi Kurdistan Horse Racing Team operates three distinct divisions:
1. Endurance Racing Testing horse and rider over distances of 50-160km through mountainous terrain. Our endurance squad recently completed the 100km Zagros Challenge with three horses finishing in the top ten.
2. Sprint Racing Traditional flat racing over distances of 1000-2000 meters, showcasing raw speed and explosive power. This discipline connects directly to historic Kurdish racing traditions.
3. Show Jumping & Dressage While not traditional, these Olympic disciplines are gaining popularity among younger Kurdish riders, blending classical training with our horses’ natural athleticism.
Meet Our Horses
Our stable houses 28 competition horses, each with a story:
- Barzan, a 7-year-old Kurdish Arabian, has won 12 endurance races and never finished outside the top five
- Shilan, a mare bred from historic bloodlines, holds the team record for the fastest 1600m sprint
- Roj, our youngest competitor at 4 years old, represents the next generation of Kurdish racing horses
Each horse receives individualized care, nutrition plans, and training regimens designed by our veterinary and conditioning team.
Traditional Meets Modern
While we honor tradition, we embrace science. Our program integrates:
- Biomechanical analysis to optimize riding position and prevent injury
- Nutritional science with supplements tailored to each horse’s needs
- Veterinary care including regular check-ups, dental work, and hoof care
- Mental conditioning ensuring horses remain calm and focused under pressure
This holistic approach has reduced injury rates by 40% while improving performance times across all disciplines.
Cultural Significance
Horse racing in Kurdistan is more than sport—it’s cultural preservation. We organize:
- Newroz racing festivals celebrating Kurdish New Year with traditional competitions
- Youth riding programs teaching children horsemanship and cultural heritage
- Breeder support initiatives providing resources to maintain pure Kurdish horse lines
- Educational workshops about the historical role of horses in Kurdish society
These programs ensure that future generations understand and value this vital part of our identity.
Recent Achievements
The past year has been remarkable for our equestrian team:
- Gold medal in the team endurance category at the Middle East Equestrian Championships
- Three horses qualified for international competitions in UAE and Turkey
- Recognition from the World Arabian Horse Organization for our conservation efforts
- Partnership with veterinary universities for equine health research
These accomplishments put Kurdish horse racing on the international map.
The Human-Horse Bond
What sets our program apart is the deep relationship between rider and horse. Our riders:
- Spend countless hours grooming and caring for their mounts
- Learn to read subtle behavioral cues
- Develop trust through consistent, compassionate training
- Understand that performance follows welfare, not the other way around
This philosophy creates not just faster horses, but happier, healthier athletes.
